Principal's Message

Dearest McKinley Families,

On behalf of the teachers, school staff and myself, welcome to the 2022-23 school year! I pray that you and your loved ones are doing well during these unprecedented times. I am so impressed with how well we were able to pivot to distance learning in the Spring.  Your will, tenacity, and ability to cope and adjust is commendable! Please know that we truly miss the laughter of children in the halls, we miss their smiling faces, high fives and all the interactions we had with each and every one of you, our amazing parents!

Our first day of school is August 20, 2022 and distance learning begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. As we prepare for the new school year, we understand that there may be potential gaps in student learning. We are ready to address any deficits through small group and individualized instruction. Our forward thinking school district has always had in place a great Educational Technology department that will be helping to support the continuum of student learning through our virtual model.

In McKinley’s distance learning program, your child will experience a rigorous, engaging new way of learning.  We have many online programs, applications, and the power of video meeting platforms like Zoom and Google Meets that enable us to have face to face instruction while being physically distant. We will also continue our partnerships with Turnaround Arts CA and Education Through Music LA, so students will still receive an arts integrated education. With many resources at hand, and your support, I am sure our distance learning program will be a great success.

As with previous school years, student attendance will be taken each morning, students are considered present when they are logged on their Zoom or Google Meets classroom.  I will give you more information about attendance, being a good digital citizen, and learning expectations via a town hall style Zoom meeting.  Look out for a Parent Square message from me with the details. Finally, students will receive a Google Classroom invitation from his or her new teacher, as well as information about the daily schedule, including office hours.  So stay tuned for more information and if we can help you with anything please call 310-898-6320 or email mpugh@compton.k12.ca.us.  I look forward to a great school year.  We are McKinley Strong!  Take care and be healthy!

Your Grateful Principal,

Ms. Monique Pugh, M.A. Ed.
